J.J. Sedelmaier's Original Animated NBC-TV Logo
is Reprised for the Network's
75th Anniversary Campaign

WHITE PLAINS NY May 6 - An animated NBC-TV logo-morph ID that was produced in 1993 by J.J. Sedelmaier Productions has come out of the archives to play a key role in the network's 75th anniversary promotional campaign. The logo animation was featured on NBC-TV's 75th Anniversary television special, in historical vignettes on The Today Show, used in the opening of the NBC Nightly News, and incorporated into a GE "Mister Wizard" commercial.

"What a thrill it is to see work the studio produced back in '93 revived in such a special way," said Sedelmaier of the spot he directed for the classic NBC "Peacock" campaign. "We produced three spots, one with artist Al Hirschfeld and another with a spinning color wheel that resolved into the NBC Peacock, but the logo evolution was NBC's favorite. At the time, they even produced limited edition lithographs of it. I'm proud that NBC thinks it is still cool enough to use as a branding tool for a major milestone celebration."

Sedelmaier employed a hands-on approach to produce the animated 2D spot that rapidly evolved the NBC logo from its Twenties origin to its Nineties iteration, an effect now called morphing. "I used NBC logos from each decade, animating into each other, beginning with the vintage square black-and-white logo (that was attached to the old carbon microphones), which I shot in black-and-white and dragged across the studio roof to create age scratches."

The:10 spot also features the NBC microphone logo with lightning bolts, from the late '30s, the '50s black-and-white NBC lettered logo with chime tone, the original NBC Peacock logo with lots of color and feathers, and concludes with a newer, simplified Peacock logo variation.

"When I originally presented the three boards, the NBC group immediately dug the historical transformation one totally," noted Sedelmaier. "I don't know if it's because they felt they could use it down the line or what, but it was very well received from the beginning!"
